Symbol Audio's Modern Record Player at ICFF

Audio/furniture design studio Symbol Audio, which handcrafts modern audio consoles and vinyl album storage cabinets in the tradition of fine furniture, showed off their latest gem this week at the high-end luxury 2018 ICFF furniture fair at New York’s Javits Center.

The Modern Record Player—displayed appropriately on its custom-designed pedestal stand—offers a novel blend of traditional audiophile record player with wireless streaming capability (via a concealed internal compartment with on board power that allows for invisible integration of small wireless components like Sonos Connect or Airport Express) on a tabletop scale.

Symbol’s marketing director Mary Hoffer noted that with vinyl records outselling digital music downloads last year, “there’s clearly a demand” for such a high-end audio item. But since streaming is way more prevalent, she noted that The Modern Record Player offers the audiophile that option in addition to vinyl record play.

Based in Nyack, N.Y., Symbol Audio started out in 2012 with its flagship Modern Record Console—a modernist all-in-one homage to the phonograph/tube amplifier/speaker console hi-fi systems of the 1950s and ‘60s. Then came the Stereo Console Table as a smaller amplifier/speaker unit blending traditional analog and modern digital technologies allowing push-button switching between sound sources.

Still smaller is the Tabletop HiFi amplified speaker cabinet that likewise delivers audiophile sound from any source. And seeing a void in the market for vinyl album storage, Symbol Audio has introduced the wooden Dovetail Vinyl Storage Cabinet utilizing a “file drawer” approach allowing easy access to an entire record collection; there’s also the Dovetail Record Crate for storing up to 100 LPs in a portable wooden crate, along with the modular Aero storage/component cabinet program.

Finally, the Unison Record Stand also provides space for both audio components and LP storage.

“We create fine furniture pieces that incorporate fine audio elements,” concluded Hoffer.
