Terry Crews returned to the annual International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) last week at New York’s Javits Center, this time to promote his latest creation for modern furniture manufacturer Bernhardt Design.

In his debut collection for Bernhardt, the former pro football linebacker-turned-actor (The Expendables, Brooklyn Nine-Nine) offered unique pieces for the home and hospitality markets. He followed it with Elevation, a system of benches and tables created for large open areas.

With his new Becca Collection, Crews offers finely tailored sofas and club chairs.

“I see Becca as a functional sculpture,” he said. “It’s very comfortable--which is rare for modern furniture. I was inspired by my wife—who is named Rebecca--and was thinking about what she likes and doesn’t like about modern furniture.”

The Becca Collection consists of a sofa 98-inches wide, a 75-inch-wide settee and a large-scaled club chair. Three welt choices are available: standard, decorative trim, and a bespoke welt fashioned in a material selected by the customer. The collection is available in any Bernhardt Textile fabric and leather, or the customer’s own material.

“I’ve been very inspired lately by wonderful examples of transitional architecture, which is typically described as a bridge between the traditional and modern, creating a new and comfortably warm aesthetic,” noted Crews. “Becca is an encapsulation of this principle because it blends soft curves that suggest emotion with modern lines that propose intellect.”

Observing that Crews had started a boutique clothing brand (Amen & Amen) several years ago, Bernhardt’s president Jerry Helling lauded his “dedication to quality materials, precise tailoring and unique details in fashion, [which] are on full display in Becca. In particular, the bespoke welt design provides a subtle special element one finds in his garments. He has created a beautiful sculptural piece that is going to appeal to many different people and work well with other furniture and objects.”

Crews attended ICFF two years ago, and participated in a panel about design originating from nontraditional creators with singer-songwriter and fellow Bernhardt designer Tift Merritt.

“This is my third collection with Bernhardt Design,” Crews concluded. “I really love the process. From sketching to furniture or product design, art is everything to me.”
